I have been marketing online for just over four years now, and if I'm honest, when I look back, it's been tough to get to where I am today.

In fact I was chatting with my business partner Lee about this yesterday. We've been working together online now for about 15 months and he finally admitted that he found it really tough when he first got started as well.

So, why is it so tough to get a start in "Internet Marketing"?

Every day someone is promising the "holy grail" of "instant online riches" and the "dream lifestyle. In fact if you check your inbox, it's probably the same as mine, about 47 "Gurus" each day...promising you the earth!

If there is so much help that abounds...why does it then take so long to start making any money?

The first thing I would say is that I had to start from a very low point. I knew absolutely nothing! I didn't know how to build a website, what Adwords was, or an autoresponder. So, I had to fish around and learn everything from the ground up.

It took me about a year to realise there are a lot of "smoke and mirrors" when it comes to learning what you need to learn to build a successful, and more importantly profitable Internet business.

Yes, for 12 months I was seduced by one ridiculous promise after another and I spent a fortune on products that were, quite frankly, a crock of crap! I made no money, in fact I lost money buying lots of useless instructional products.

O.K, I did learn a few things, but...in truth I was no further forward.

Occasionally, someone rides to the rescue! And, I have said on a few of my Hubs that I was sorry that Adwords Excellence disappeared a couple of years back. Stewart McKay (where are you Stewart?) got me on the straight and narrow. I learned so much from him and finally started to see some successes here and there.

At last! But, what I had come to realise is that all of the products the "Gurus" peddle are very specific. That's to say they address one (normally minor) issue within the great IM scheme of things...and then tell you this is the holy grail.

All this weight of proof is provided and, yes, you've guessed it, you and I get sold!

But...no-one tells you the basics!

If I was going to be really controversial I could suggest that the Gurus find a technqiue that works, flog it until it's dead for them, and then...and only then bundle it up into a product for "the masses".

Add to this the huge amount of useless and recycled rubbish that is wheeled out with some very sophisticated marketing, and...well, not to put too finer point on it, it's easy to buckle under the wieght of information and sales crap flying at you.

Still, no-one bothers to teach the basics! How to do buy a domain, set up your cpanel, do BASIC market research?

Now a BIG Guru may counter that you should outsource all of that. Great if you can afford it, but I know I couldn't when I first started.

Besides...I have a "loose" chromosome that dictates that I HAVE to understand everything... yes it held me back :>)

So, Lee and I were talking back in September (2009) and we made a "quality" decision that someone needed to provide that very basic "how to" Internet Marketing information.

Then we made the most crazy decision of our lives and decided that we were going to do just that!

Then we usurped ourselves and made the most crazy decision of our lives again...and decided we were going to do it totally FREE of charge.

"But it will take a long time and a lot of work", I protested.

But Lee was having none of it, the bit was between his teeth. He had decided "it was about time those "smoke and mirrors" were banished, the crap was "cut through" and the information made freely available".

So, we sat down and talked about it and reasoned why we wanted to do this.

In the end it came down to two things.

Firstly, online is definitely where it's happening. Despite the "recession" people who have got it right online have not only maintained business levels during the downturn, most have seen growth.

So, knowing how diffiuclt it was for us to get started, we felt it a bit of a moral crusade to make the basic information freely available to anyone who wanted to give Internet Marketing "a go".

Secondly we figured that if we did this and made a huge amount of training available free we would build a huge amount of trust with a huge amount of people...clearly this is very good.

So, if we achieved that trust and helped loads of people, we knew good things would flow back to us in the longer run. Maybe it's a leap of faith, but I think not.

So, it took us just over four months to give birth to Internet Marketing Strategic...and here it is! With the first three major sectors complete and live. As Is aid, we'll be delivering more and more on an ongoing basis.
